In this case, I came up with the idea of how my mediacenter solution should work. The ingredients involve a Mac mini, a netgear NAS, virtualbox and of course - my iPad. </p> <p>I mean, how hard can it be these days?</p> <p><span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span"><a href="http://www.plexapp.com" target="_blank"> <img align="right" src="http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lyoiuze3Vz1qezbiy.png"/></a></span> </span></p> <h2><span class="Apple-style-span"></span>Attempt #1</h2> <p>Installing FreeBSD on my mac through virtualbox which should run rtorrent to fetch my media, everything seems fine, until I test the performance. It seems to cap at 100Mbit even when the host has 1Gbit. Maybe it’s the network card virtualization? After some struggling getting virtio para virtualized driver to work I’m getting much less CPU hogging on the host but still far from great network performance. Oh and my host machine completely froze twice.</p> <h2>Attempt #2</h2> <p>The host never had performance problems, it could even talk to the guest in gigabit speeds. So I thought I’d just share the folder using virtualbox share, simple right? No, that doesn’t work with FreeBSD. Ok, how about sharing it via samba? That should work at least? No, since Mac osx doesn’t allow sharing a folder which is mounted remotely (the NAS remember?).</p> <h2>Attempt #3</h2> <p>Okay screw virtualbox, it’s obviously more pain than gain. Installing rtorrent thought macports is easy enough. Said and done I got my rtorrent with torrent watch directories auto download and everything, now let’s try downloading a couple of movies to the network mounted NAS and see what happens. Well, the sound of the harddrives reminds me of trying to start doom on my 486 machine while swapping like a boss but at least its not capped and it’s downloading. It looks like I solved it finally?</p> <p>But then suddenly rtorrent crashes and crashes and crashes, complaining of some bus error. It seems rtorrent or my osx doesn’t like all that random writing on the networked drive. Back to the drawing board.</p> <h2>Attempt #4</h2> <p>My Mac got a 500G drive, this is enough to hold some data even without a NAS. What if rtorrent could move my data to the NAS once the download completes? A quick google gave me an example of how to configure just that. And it works! FINALLY! I may have future problems ahead but at least at the moment it seems to work.</p> <h2>Conclusion</h2> <p>Automated downloading of new torrents and moving it to the NAS together with Plex media server (and later flexget for getting the actual torrent file from rss feeds) is a great combination. It can also stream to your iPad or a friend using my.plexapp.com.
